About Us...meet the team

Based in Rockhampton, GDT CQ offers the same nationally renown experience and service in 4WD driver training our NSW clients have received over the last 29 years.

The Central Queensland branch is a qualified and Registered Training Organisation (RTO), backed by the reputation of Great Divide Tours and owner Vic Widman: one of Australia’s most well known and experienced 4WD personalities.

Vic Widman 4WD

Vic Widman

Business owner. Head Office Sydney and Braidwood Training Centre

From touring the Outback on virtually every dirt road possible, to training people from all walks of life in the art of 4WDing at his purpose built training centre, “Outback Vic” has ensconced himself as one of Australia’s most notable 4WD authorities.

Great Divide Tours started as a tag-along tour company in 1990, but quickly developed into a training organisation as well, with Vic seeing the need to teach people how to safely and effectively operate their 4WD vehicles. Since then, Great Divide Tours has trained in excess of 29,000 people as well as safely guiding thousands more in their own vehicles to many remote and isolated locations all over Australia.

Vic was also employed by the NSW State Government for 44 years, working in the Premier’s office and Ministry of Police and Emergency Services for over 27 years.

Vic has written 3 books on 4WD related issues – he literally “wrote the book” on 4WDriving for the CSIRO, which now sells his manual of How to 4WD. Over the past 34 years he has written articles in many of Australia’s leading 4WD magazines including Overlander, Unsealed 4x4 and 4x4 Australia. He has appeared on various 4WD TV shows and has had regular spots on nationwide radio shows for the last 4 years. In fact you can hear him on Rockhampton KIX Country 92.7 FM Sunday Morning between 6am-9am.

And of course Vic has a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment as well as several 4WD related competencies.

Tony Davys

Tony Davys

Branch Manager, Senior 4WD Instructor, Rockhampton, Central Queensland

Tony relocated with his family to Rockhampton in January 2019 to start a branch of Great Divide Tours 4WD Training. For the previous 4 years he has worked at Great Divide’s training centre in Braidwood NSW and lead tag-along tours all over Australia.

Tony has visited many parts of Australia in the course of his travels, safely leading groups of customers in their own vehicles to iconic locations such as the Kimberley, Arnhem Land, Cape York, Flinders Ranges, Central Australia, the Canning Stock Route and the Victorian High Country. Not a bad effort for a Kiwi who moved to Australia after the events of the Christchurch earthquakes destroyed his 4WD hire business.

Tony holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. He also has a Degree in Tourism and a Masters Degree in Wildlife Management, both from Lincoln University in Christchurch, NZ.

Our Projects

Our relevant experience includes past and ongoing training of large corporate and government clients. For example, Snowy Hydro and many of their contractors; the Australian Federal Police; Australian Defence Force; Essential Energy, State Emergency Service; Australian Bureau of Statistics; ARB, Toyota dealers, VW dealers.

Vic Widman 4WD

Australian Federal Police

Great Divide Tours Driver Training has a long standing contract to train AFP staff in Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment training. These staff include active members of the Police, DFAT staff, AFP Police Rescue, and disaster relief advisors. Often these clients are required to travel to Pacific Islands at short notice in the event of natural disasters to render assistance. Generally operating in less than ideal conditions, they must be able to confidently operate a range of different 4WD vehicle types.

Vic Widman 4WD

Australian Defence Force

Another long standing contract we have is to provide Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment training for combined members of the Australian Defence Force. Within weeks of being trained by us, they are usually sent on deployment to South Sudan in Africa, a notoriously dangerous country. From the feedback we have received from military staff who have returned from deployment there, our training has proven to be very beneficial, as their location is usually either a dust bowl or a mud hole, literally being under water.

Vic Widman 4WD

Snowy Hydro and Contractors

Great Divide Tours was contracted in 2018 to provide training for Snowy Hydro’s huge upgrade to the scheme. This is an ongoing project as “Snowy 2.0” will see a duplication of the existing hydro scheme which will massively boost their hydroelectric power production. As much of the work is conducted in mountainous terrain, Snowy Hydro requires its staff and contractors who operate 4WD vehicles to complete a high level of Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment training.
